January 10, 2013

Welcome back!

We trust you all had a relaxing time, and I have heard that many of you are very happy to have your kids back with us!

In Mr. Martin's English class, we have just written the Cathy Peters Reading Assessment today.  This will give me a good chance to see where your son/daughter is in terms of reading and comprehension levels.  The students are going to start an independent novel project, and will be making oral presentations (book reviews) during this term.

In Science, both Mr. Martin and Mrs. Wocknitz's classes will be writing a chapter 2 exam OR creating a project to demonstrate their knowledge.  Both of these are due next Wednesday or Thursday.  We are currently looking at the respiratory and circulatory systems of the human body, and will be making life size cutouts of these and other systems over the next few weeks.

In Socials, Mr. Martin's class is now looking at the fall of the Roman Empire, and will be hosting a sword fighting contest on Thursday. We will NOT be using real swords, but will be using life size shields and padded wooden dowels, as well as hockey helmets.

Please ask your child about the next set of interviews at the middle of term 2, called "Student Led Conferences."  The students will be collecting work samples to show you their progress, and the entire conference will be led by the students.  The teachers are only there to assist, and will not be holding typical Parent-Teacher interviews this term.
