Tuesday Feb 28, 2012

Fun Day:  We had a great time yesterday at the arena, as well as the theatre.  Less students actually skated than we had hoped, but those that did had a chance to play hockey (completely organized by the students), or skate around with Mdm Wocknitz (who complained bitterly that her feet were cold!)  Thanks to all the students who volunteered to participate in the Improv Theatre.  We saw some "amazing" blindfolded makeup presentations, as well as some excellent voice impersonations in a game of "Master Master, who am I"  We ended the day with a game of bus stop, in which the goal was to make the other person crack up.

Science:  Mr. Martin's class has done day 2 of the first part of the science lab on Mystery Powders.  They will continue on Thursday, and Mdm Wocknitz class will work on day 2 of the lab on Wednesday

English:  Several students in Mr. Martin's room have done part or all of their novel presentations.  We will be starting presentations for the rest of the class on Thursday.  All students drew a number for the presentation orders, but some students have chosen to present to Mr. Martin privately at lunch, in the morning, or after school.  Memoirs:  Mr. Martin's class should have their GOOD copies of their memoirs ready to hand in for this Friday.

Socials:  This will be the last week for preparing the debates on the Northern Gateway Pipeline in Mr. Martin's class.  Debates will take place in class next week.  Your son/daughter should have their speach written on cue cards, as well as have approximately 10-15 questions to ask the opposite team.

Pink Day:  Tomorrow is Pink Day.  Hopefully all students will wear a pink shirt to symbolize "anti bullying"

Zen Reading:  We only get library time every second Thursday, and many students are at a loss for what to read during our 30 minutes after lunch.  Perhaps you can help them find a magazine or 2 that could be left in the classroom incase they, or others, forget their books one day.

Wednesday Feb 22

Fun Books:  Just a reminder to all parents that Fun Books are available from the Len Wood office for 1/2 price.  This is a PAC fundraiser to help purchase equipment for the school.  If you wish more information, please contact Mr. Martin or Mr. Findlay in the office

Science:  Both classes will start the large "mystery powder" lab Thursday or Friday.  I divided the students up into groups, so some students will NOT be with their friends.  I hope the emphasis on this lab will be to get excellent practice, and not just to meet social needs.  If you would like to come in one day and see the Scientists at work, we will be in the lab each day from 10-11am

Fun Day:  Please be sure to sign and return the permission forms for our full day of activities this coming monday.  If you'd like to be involved in our Improv theatre (everything from blind folded makeup artists, to Bus Stop where you need to make the other person laugh, please let one of the green team teacher know)

Math:  As both classes will be absent on Monday, it is up to the students in Grade 8 to be sure they know what math they will be missing on that day.  All grade 7 students will not miss any new material, as their math teachers will be away as well.

Tuesday Feb 21, 2012

Fun Day: A reminder that next Monday will be a Green Team Fun Day.  We have reserved the Nor Val arena for skating (helmets mandatory), and then we will be heading to the Centenial Hall for the day.  We will watch a movie, have a bag lunch (they have to bring their own lunches), and we will have "theatre sports" aka Improv Theatre.  Permission forms are going home today

PE:  We will be outside for PE after the cultural performance today.  All students were told yesterday to dress warmly for today

Socials:  Mr. Martin's class should have ALL their research done for the debate topic.  They should have their main points ready to explain in their Intro speach, and have at least half the questions they want to ask the opposite side after the other side is done their speach.

Math 7: retests for chapter 3 will take place for the boys at lunch Wednesday.  They must have corrections done, had you sign the test, and come in for at least one review session over the past 2 weeks

Science:  Any students that want a retest will have a chance to write one on Thursday.  Information will come from chapter 4 and 5, as well as the KMT.  This week we will start a chemistry lab that will last likely until Spring break.  It is titled "Mystery Powders", and they will be practicing skills of measuring, weighing on a balance scale, identifying chemical and physical changes, using iodine and other liquids, and heating a substance.  Mr. Martin will be picking the groups of 3 that will work together.

Wednesday Feb 15, 2012

Math 7 (boys):  The boys have an opportunity to retest the chapter 3 information, but must come to one of the lunch or afterschool review sessions Mr. Martin has been putting on.  They must also have all corrections done before being given the opportunity to show their learning.  Retests will take place at lunch next week.
Today the boys reviewed calculating area of a parallelogram.

Socials: (Martin): today we looked at resources to promote the PRO side for the debate on the Northern Gateway Pipeline.  Both sides should now be gathering their 3-5 main points for the debate, and they will have time in the afternoon Thursday to work with their partner in laying out information and evidence to support their points.
Several students still need to turn in their Illustrated History projects.  Only 15 came in on Monday.

PE- we plan to be inside for tomorrow's class.  Hopefully next week we can split into 2 groups to start road hockey

Science- we are looking at pure substances and compounds

English- Students should be writing the main action part of their Memoir.  They will have time to work on it in the afternoon if they don't need computer time for researching the debate information for socials.

And finally.....
A BIG THANKYOU to all the parents that baked the great goodies, and those that volunteered their time to help out with the Green Team Valentines dance yesterday.  We will be sending home left over food containers, so if your child brought one in, and you didn't get it back today, please let us know.

Monday, February 13, 2012

This week our team will be hosting a dance on Valentines Day!  If any parents wish to come out and help, let us know!

Math 7 (Girls)
We are finishing Unit 3.  Mid-Unit tests will go back tomorrow and they will have to correct them and explain what they missed/needed to know/how they made their errors - please read their explanations, sign the tests when they come home and please return them!  The Unit 3 Test will be on THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 16 so you should see them reviewing their notes, or their textbooks (and online textbook if they forgot them at school!).

Math 7 (boys)
We went over calculating pi, circumference, radius, and diameter of circles.  Today we introduced how to make a parallelogram into a rectangle in order to use the formula "base x height" to find the area.  I am still working towards reviewing 1 question each lunch hour or after school before offering a retest.  If the boys don't come in for a review, they will NOT be allowed to take a retest.  They must also have all corrections done for the test.

French (HCE is suspended for Valentines Day!) - It IS after all, the "language of love"!
Using pre-framed expressions, both classes have been creating French Valentines (or a love letter) anonymously for a member of the class.  They will be surprising - each one will come from a famous person/character!  For the most part, the students have done a good job creating and personalizing them so it should be fun!

Socials (Martin)-1/2 of the Illustrated History projects came in today, the rest should be considered late unless the student has already talked to me.

Thursday Feb 9, 2012

PE:  Yahoo, it snowed last night, so 1/2 the class was able to get their second chance at cross country skiing.  Here are some photos from today.  Next week we are planning on having 4 stations in the gym, everything from juggling to high jump.  Another outdoor option that will be coming up is road hockey in the tennis court area.

Socials:  Mr. Martin's class had a chance to watch a video on the "CON" side of the Northern Gateway Pipeline debate.  The students have chosen a partner to be on the same debate team with.  They will debate 2 other students in the class around the proposal by Enbridge to build 2 pipelines to transport oil from Northern Alberta to the West Coast.  The link to the video is
http://newswatch.nationalgeographic.com/tag/spirit-bear/
Mr. Martin's class should have all of the Illustrated History project done for Monday.

English:  Students will have time tomorrow to finish off the rough copy of their first paragraph AFTER the lead that they choose.  By the end of the block they should have both of these paragraphs to share with you.

Dance:  Thanks to the students who helped organize the concession items, as well as those who helped pick the songs.  Mr. Martin has given 3 students the job to download the songs that have been suggested so that we can spend the afternoon Friday approving the final song list.  We were stressing that the songs chosen can't just be "good songs" they must be "good dancing songs" and represent a cross genre of Country to Hip Hop

T-Shirts: (at least I spelled it right THIS time)  Any parents who wish to purchase a T-shirt can piggyback on the same order form that has been sent out with those students who asked for one.

Math:  2 grade 8 math classes have tests tomorrow, and both grade 7 classes have had one in the last week.  These should all be coming home for you to look at.

Science:  Both classes have chapter 6 vocab to complete for this Friday

English: The students should have 20 of the 40 points done for their novel study by now.  They should be done in about 2 weeks.
For the Memoirs, they should have all 3 "leads" written, and should have another paragraph explaining the setting, etc done for this coming Monday

Socials:  Illustrated history projects are due this coming Monday

T-Shirts:  order forms have gone home today for anyone interested in purchasing one.  Mr. Martin is going to check on using some of their funds from the Haunted House volunteering to offset costs of their personal shirt

Monday Feb 6, 2012

Math: Apparently Mdm Wocknitz has gotten into the spirit, and offered the gr 7 girls a chance to do her makeup if they get 100% on their math test.  Go Girls, Mr. Martin doesn't want to be the only one with a "new look" this week.

Science:  Mr. Martin's class started to work on chapter 6 vocab today, Mdm Wocknitz class will start it on Tuesday

T-Shirt order; For those who wanted one, Mr. Martin will be sending home an order form on Wednesday for parents to put in sizes, etc.

Science:  Today Mr. Martin paid the price for anyone who got 100% on the last chapter test.  Congratulations to his new hairdresser.

You just have to love the Valentines Heart!

Socials:  Mr. Martin's class has split into groups to look at the Pro and Con of the Northern Gateway Pipeline project.  We will be using the computers tomorrow to research information, and we will be working towards having debates in class on the topic.

Friday, February 3, 2012 (vendredi le 3 fevrier ... viernes el 3 de febrero)

Math 7 Girls
We have been working on Unit 3 - sections 1-6 and will have a Mid-Unit TEST on Monday!  Remember, if they forget their Math Texts, go to:

username: drkwebmath
password: drk7628177

Health and Career Education
We are wrapping up our look at drug addictions with presentations almost complete.  The remaining students (both classes) will finish up their presentations on MONDAY!!  Please remind your child that the focus of the presentation is the presenting part - the information is secondary.

Once all are complete, we will be taking a break from Health and Career Education, to do a little more FRENCH  (yippee!)!
Socials; For any students in Mr. Martin's class who have been away and missed the videos for the Illustrate History project they are working on, here is the address

http://documentarystorm.com/stories-of-the-stone-age/3/
You should be done 4-6 of the 9 illlustrated history drawings by now
English- (Martin) Students should be done their independent novel (reading) and be working on their choice of projects (check the link on the side of the blog if you need another list of the projects) I said that they should be done 10 - 15 points of the 40 point total for the projects. For their Memoir, they should have written all 3 "leads" for the story. They needed to write 1 action, 1 thinking, and 1 conversation lead. Today they had a chance to start writing their 1st paragraph after the intro.
Science- Wow, what an incentive to study! Tons of students ALMOST received 100% on the chapter 4 test. Unfortunately (for Mr. Martin) one student in Mdm Wocknitz class did get it, so that student gets to leave their artistic impressions in Mr. Martin's hair
PE Next week those students who were inside this week will be outside cross country skiing (weather permitting), and the others will be inside working on skipping rope activities.
